<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A methodology for the production of 1,3&#8208;butadiene <B>1</B>, the key monomer for synthetic rubber is reported here from erythritol <B>2</B>. Erythritol is obtained from the fermentation of xylose by osmotolerant yeasts like <I>Yarrowia lipolytica</I>. Xylose was found to be a superior source of carbon yielding up to five fold higher titer values of erythritol as compared to that of glucose. Erythritol, the key intermediate, was then converted to 1,3&#8208;butadiene through tetramesyl erythritol derivative <B>5</B> in significant yields.</P>
