The gross energy production potentials in the form of biomethane and ethanol were determined for Spirulina platensis algae and enzymatically saccharified switchgrass. S. platensis algae alone, switchgrass alone, and a mixture of both (composed of 50% of each material, based on total solids) were anaerobically digested at 50oC for 30 days. Enzymatic saccharification of switchgrass was pretreated by sodium hydroxide (1% (w/w)) for 12 hr at 50oC. After 96h of enzymatic saccharification, the determined glucose yields were 184.4 and 141.21mgg-1 [raw biomass], and xylose yields were 101.6 and 66.5mgg-1 [raw biomass] for pretreated switchgrass and the mixture of both materials, respectively. Ethanol production potential was estimated to be 166Ltonne-1 [dry switchgrass]. The estimated gross energy in the form of biomethane via anaerobic digestion from the non-pretreated switchgrass was 6774MJtonne-1 that was significantly higher than that (3904MJtonne-1) of the enzymatically saccharified switchgrass when used to produce ethanol.
