<P>Hydrogen is a promising energy carrier, but producing it sustainably remains a challenge. Green algae can produce hydrogen photosynthetically using their efficient but oxygen-sensitive hydrogenases. Recent strategies aiming to bypass competing processes provide a promising route for scaling up algal hydrogen production.</P>
