<P>The hyperthermophile <I>Pyrococcus furiosus</I> catalyses the hydrogenation of a broad range of carboxylic acids selectively to the corresponding primary alcohols. Other functional groups such as isolated C&z.dbd;C-double bonds are not touched. The chemoselectivity of the carboxylate reduction may be directed towards aldehydes by simple medium engineering.</P><BR><BR><P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Under mild reaction conditions biohydrogenation of carboxylic acids to the corresponding alcohols or aldehydes by using <I>Pyrococcus furiosus</I> is reported.<BR><IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2cc36479d'><BR></P>
